We first discovered this exquisite wooden tableware on an onsen trip to the Kiso Valley in Nagano Prefecture a few years ago, and we've been returning every fall since. Hand-turned from local woods and then coated in a clear natural urushi lacquer, the craftsmen masterfully allow the beauty of the wood to shine through. This bowl was carved from ume, Japanese apricot, the fruit of which is pickled to become umeboshi. When the trees are retired from fruiting, they are often repurposed into chopsticks and tableware, where their rich grain and aged wood tone are particularly prized.
Run by Kazuo Ogura, a fifth-generation woodturner, Yamaichi Rokuro produces fine handturned and natural urushi-lacquered woodwork made from local hardwoods in Nagano Prefecture, from tableware to furniture and everything in between. With an eye for stunning wood grains and effects, Yamaichi Rokuro brings a refreshingly modern approach to an ancient art.
