The classic mortar and pestle of Japan, the suribachi and surikogi are essential items for the traditional Japanese kitchen. The textured interior makes grinding easy, while still retaining some texture to the ingredients. A suribachi is perfect for grinding salt or spices, as well as making guacamole or mixing salad dressings. It features a spout for pouring more liquid preparations and has a silicone ring around its base to prevent slippage while mixing.
Mujun is a collaboration between a team of young designers in Hyogo Prefecture and the traditional craftsmen of Motoshige, who have been hand-making suribachi since 1925. The designers of Mujun seek to update traditional crafts to cater to modern life, while maintaining their key elements and core values.
