Entirely Handmade; thrown on a potters wheel with handbill alterations for a unique shape. Beautiful as an objet but designed to be used, suitable for a single branch or small floral arrangement and finished in granite glaze with iron brushstroke. The glaze is made almost entirely from local granite, minimally milled to preserve its rugged quality. A local iron material called ilmenite was used to make the brushstrokes across the surface. Made entirely by hand from clay and glaze ingredients foraged in the Sierra foothills, this vase makes a beautiful and unique gift.
From his background as a chef, Matt Fishman brings similar values of handcraft and locally sourced ingredients to his pottery practice. All of his work is created with wild clay and glazes that he forages from clay, stone, and plant ash locally in the Sierra Nevada and Bay Area. With the earthy, rustic feel of his ceramics, he seeks to create a unique record of the geology of Northern California.
