Takeda Kahei Shoten

Shibori Coasters | Set of 4

Regular price $60

A set of four generously sized coasters, each hand-tied and dyed in traditional shibori motifs in natural indigo, aizome. One features karamatsu shibori, named for the Japanese larch whose radiating branches this stitch-resist technique invokes. Another features maki-age shibori in the shape of a cherry blossom. And there are two in the classic kanoko pattern of tiny dots. Each is backed by black cotton fabric that lends sturdiness and more water resistance.

The historic center of shibori, the Japanese art of manual resist dyeing, Arimatsu was founded in 1608 by Shokuro Takeda who developed many early shibori patterns for tenugui and kimono fabrics. The Takeda family still produce hand-tied and dyed fabrics from their Edo-period home workshop, Takeda Kahei Shoten, located along the historic Tokaido road in Arimatsu.
