Handcarved from Japanese cherry, a hardwood prized for its beautiful warm grain, this elegant spatula is perfect for sauteing or serving. Pictured with our Ebonized Oak Serving Bowl.
Miyajima Kougei Seisakusho manufactures rice spatulas on Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture. The shamoji is said to have been invented on the island of Miyajima, in Hiroshima Bay. In the 18th century, a vision of it came to the monk Seishin in a dream, an inspiration from the goddess Benzaiten. Since then the form has remained the same, still handcarved by artisans on that island.
