Kakunodate, a town in Akita prefecture on the northernmost island of Hokkaido, has been known for crafting beautiful and resilient objects from wild cherry bark since the late 18th century—a process called kabazaiku. Towards the end of the Edo period, local samurai began taking up the craft to make ends meet as the role of warriors waned in the rapidly modernizing culture.

Elevate your tea ritual with this scoop by Denshiro, a company that has been handcrafting high-quality kabazaiku products in Akita since 1851.
