Artisans in Gifu prefecture have been handcrafting paper lanterns for 90 years. Designed by Shigeru Uchida in 1990 and handmade in Gifu, this collection of Paper Moon Lanterns speak softly with their halcyon shape and warm diffusion. The simplicity of their structure is characterized by a wire armature that dilates a continuous spiral of bamboo filament and high grade washi paper. Flat packed and gift boxed, the experience of taking a Paper Moon Lantern out of its box is like unfolding precious silk.
Shigeru Uchida (1943-2016) was one of Japan's leading designers of the 20th century, balancing traditional Japanese and modern forms through furniture, interiors, architecture, and industrial design.
