We first discovered this exquisite wooden tableware on an onsen trip to the Kiso Valley in Nagano Prefecture a few years ago, and we've been returning every fall since. Hand-turned from local woods and then coated in a clear natural urushi lacquer, the craftsmen of Yamaichi Rokuro masterfully allow the beauty of the wood to shine through. Each plate is sold separately and is totally unique. This set of plates was carved from keyaki, Japanese zelkova, a dense hardwood celebrated for its beautiful grain. Each plate is sold separately and is totally unique.
Run by Kazuo Ogura, a fifth-generation woodturner, Yamaichi Rokuro produces fine handturned and natural urushi-lacquered woodwork made from local hardwoods in Nagano Prefecture, from tableware to furniture and everything in between. With an eye for stunning wood grains and effects, Yamaichi Rokuro brings a refreshingly modern approach to an ancient art.
