Wheel-thrown in the Japanese yunomi style—a classic footed tumbler—this handle-less mug is perfect for sipping water, tea, coffee, and more. Handmade with foraged stoneware clay collected in the Sierra Nevada foothills, the glaze is composed mainly of quartz sand and wood ash, and is based on a glaze from Japan called "nuka". The cups have been scratched at the leather stage, giving the glaze lines to run down during the firing. Soda fired, which makes for unpredictable surfaces, many of which contain visible crystals.
From his background as a chef, Matt Fishman brings similar values of handcraft and locally sourced ingredients to his pottery practice. All of his work is created with wild clay and glazes that he forages from clay, stone, and plant ash locally in the Sierra Nevada and Bay Area. With the earthy, rustic feel of his ceramics, he seeks to create a unique record of the geology of Northern California.
